Chapter 11
“I’m not here to harm you.” The man holds up his human hand as if to stress the sincerity of his words to me. I can tell by his voice that he isn’t Levi or Mammon. “I’m only here to help.”
I scramble to my feet and grab the backpack off the floor in case I need to fling it at the stranger. It’s the only “weapon” I have at my disposal. He may claim to come in peace, but so did Levi when I first met him. Considering this person has the same type of clawed hand that both Levi and Mammon have, I assume this man is one of the five people Jered mentioned earlier. He said the personification of Hell, Helena, gave five people the clawed hands. Unfortunately, that conversation got interrupted by Levi’s destruction of New Eden and Jered never got to finish his story. This stranger’s promise of peace sounds nice, but I’m not going to take his word on it without further proof.
I hear the sound of wings beating the air before I see Jered land on the small ledge next to the stranger.
“Baal?” Jered asks, backing up to the very edge of the cliff.
“Hello, Jered.” Baal holds out his human hand as a cordial greeting to Jered.
Jered accepts the handshake, which makes me breathe a little easier. If he’s not worried about the man’s unexpected appearance, then neither am I.
“What in the world are you doing here?” Baal asks as their hands separate and drop back down to their sides.
“My son and Cal were sent here when this new version of the Void was made,” Jered tells him. “Have you seen either of them?”
When Baal shakes his head, I feel disappointed. I can only imagine the letdown Jered is experiencing knowing he isn’t any closer to finding his son.
“I wish I could help you, Jered, but I haven’t seen either of them here. Of course, that’s not saying much. I haven’t really left this realm of the Void since I arrived. I’m trying to avoid Levi and the others as much as possible. Tell me what happened. Why was the Void changed, and how did all the creatures and souls from Hell end up here?”
“Helena made the ultimate sacrifice,” Jered says. “The Guardians of the Guf transformed her soul into a human one, and everything inside Hell or that was ever made in Hell was transported here. That claw Helena gave you is the reason all five of you were brought here. I’m sorry you got caught up in all of this, Baal. You don’t really deserve to be here either.”
“Who are the Guardians of the Guf?” I ask Jered since I’m wondering if they’re Lora’s heavenly counterparts.
“They’re the angels who make new souls in Heaven,” he briefly explains before returning his attention to Baal. “Are you able to keep the others out of this area?”
“Unfortunately, no.” Baal sighs heavily. “But they rarely come here. Mammon makes an appearance on occasion when he travels to see Levi, but those trips only happen a couple of times a month.
